Menopause! You Need Your Head TestingĀ

I’m not sure if my experience resonates with many women, but when it came to the menopause I was uninformed and underprepared. Needing some minor surgery in my early 50’s the consultant mentioned that I may experience a range of changes in my body for example, menopause may come earlier than expected.

The reality was that menopause symptoms I didn’t really know I was experiencing started to intensify. Mood swings and disrupted sleep caught me off guard and I started to get hot flushes for the first time. It took a while for me to link this all back to the menopause but once I recognised these changes I contacted my doctors to ask for help.

HRT or CBT

My blood tests came back within normal ranges, so their next step was to offer me Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) to ease some of the symptoms. Unfortunately, due to my family medical history, HRT was not an option so what next?

While I’m a big fan of talking, just ask my husband! I was amazed when, as a next step, I was offered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Don’t get me wrong, I’ll be the first to admit that the menopause has had a negative impact on my mental health, but I was just too overwhelmed with my physical symptoms, fatigue, tiredness, hot flushes, to focus on a positive mindset.

Is the condition specific advice for menopause HRT or CBT? Maybe not but at that point I was worn out and more than a little tearful, so I didn’t pursue the matter of clinical guidelines with my doctor.

Take a Pause

My immediate need was for help to combat physical symptoms, stabilise my hormone imbalance, relax and get some sleep. This allowed me to take a pause, I then found I had the energy to work on a positive mindset as I journeyed through this stage of my life. Through research and funnily enough, talking to women who are experiencing the same issues, I started to gather a list of products that have been found to help ease many symptoms of the menopause and this was the very beginning of Pause My Pause.
